Is a single-section rated tournament suitable for lower-rated or unrated players?

Is a single-section rated tournament suitable for lower-rated or unrated players?

Yes. Players of all experience levels are welcome to participate in single-section open events.

What to Expect During Play

  • Initial Round Pairings: In a four-round event, early matchups may place unrated or lower-rated players against experienced, higher-rated opponents.

  • Balanced Later Rounds: As results come in, the Swiss pairing system matches players against opponents with similar score records in the later rounds.  Regardless of results, a player in a 4 round tournament will play 4 rounds.

  • Game Quality: Combining players into one open field creates a fuller competitive pool and ensures more dynamic play than split, smaller sections.

Prize Eligibility

  • Trophies are designated for multiple rating tiers (such as Unrated, Under 450 and Under 900) within the main section.

  • Unrated participants compete specifically against fellow unrated peers for the Top Unrated trophy.

  • All players will receive either a gold or silver medal when competing in tournaments at this club.
